When it was announced by EA at E3 2017, Anthem caused a lot of ruckus. People were expecting add-ons for or even a new Mass Effect game, and many were still caught in the outrage surrounding Mass Effect: Andromeda. To see the company take this step towards a new IP shook a lot of people.
We don’t know all too much about Anthem yet, but here’s what we do know:
What is Anthem’s release date?
Although it was originally announced to release this year, Anthem was pushed back to Early 2019. Maybe we’ll get a more precise date at E3 2018.
Where can I play Anthem?
The official website for the game says it’ll be playable on Xbox One, PC, and PS4. Whether or not it’ll utilize the Xbox One X or PS4 Pro is a different question, but it’s very likely that it will, given the fact that it’s EA and they want a reason to sell more people their game.
What genre does Anthem belong to?
The game is going to be an open world science-fantasy action role-playing game, whereby science-fantasy they mean “you see a lot of amazing things happening but we don’t worry too much about why they’re happening or how they’re happening, the science of it”, as Bioware announced in an interview with CBC. So, actually, it’s not really science-fantasy, which would be an amalgamation of science-fiction and fantasy, it’s just science-fiction without the science.
“In this shared-world action-RPG, you and your friends are Freelancers—the bold few with the courage to leave civilization behind, explore a landscape of primeval beauty, and confront the dangers you find.” (Anthem)
-A lot of fans have been saying that Anthem might have less focus on story than the Mass Effect games, but the developers have (at least officially) confirmed that this will not be the case
-EA might already have a ton of DLC lined up for the game, as they’ve stated that they want the game to be played for years.
-BioWare seems under a lot of pressure with this game, especially after what happened to BioWare Montreal after Andromeda, it’s not hard to guess what might happen to the studio as a whole if they fail again. (hint: not untypical for EA)
-Being a shared-world game, you can go online and play with other players, or you can go and do your own thing.
-The game will be in third-person usually, but in first-person mode when you’re in the hub areas.
-Despite the fancy mechsuits, you can’t go as far as you want into the air, nor can you stay underwater forever. You’ll have to upgrade those to stay longer.
-Despite how it may seem at times, you’re not on Earth in the game
