They’ve long been a favorite of bankers, keen to portray an air of authority.

But Christina Aguilera’s unusual take on pinstripes made for a rather bizarre red carpet look on Sunday night, as she arrived for the Billboard Awards in Las Vegas.

The talented singer was sadly relegated to the worst dressed list in the unflattering and bulky gown, which looked heavy and uncomfortable.

Featuring a long train, wide V-neck and long sleeves, the floor-length belted gown’s excess bulky fabric did little to enhance Christina’s silhouette.

Perhaps that was a deliberate choice by the 37-year-old, who clearly intended to make a statement ahead of her performance on stage on Sunday night.

For Christina is currently promoting her first record since 2012’s Lotus, her new LP Liberation, and plans to perform the first track, Fall In Line, with Demi Lovato onstage at The Billboards.

Suit up in style with a striped dress like Christina

Ready for a musical comeback, Christina Aguilera performed a duet with Demi Lovato at the Billboard Music Awards.

But prior to that, she made her arrival in a custom design by 16 Arlington, a brand new label by Italian designers Marco Capaldo and Federica Cavenati.

The off-shoulder frock was covered in pinstripes and featured a dramatic train and an oversized belt that cinched the waist.

We love the androgynous vibes we’re getting from this piece as well as the play on proportions. Follow the link opposite to 16 Arlington’s website to see what else they have to offer.

Striped suiting will never go out of style so if you want to try out this look for yourself, we’ve found several options to help you capture Christina’s essence at prices that won’t break the bank. Check them out now.

Performer: Hopefully the powerhouse will be shedding her funeral-like garb for something more flattering

In tune with the newly politicised atmosphere in the entertainment industry, she has tweeted her track is dedicated: ‘To anyone who’s ever felt silenced and repressed, the truth seekers and bold thinkers… may you liberate your voice and break the mold, never back down, and never fall in line.’

And of course, the powerhouse may well be shedding her funeral-like garb for something more flattering before hitting the stage.

While Christina stood out on the red carpet, she wasn’t alone in making an unusual fashion choice.

Don't sit behind her! Z LaLa, the singer surely best known for her eye-catching red carpet looks, went for a futuristic take on fashion, that left her looking like an extra from a science fiction movie

Singer Z LaLa went for a futuristic take on fashion, that left her looking like an extra from a science fiction movie.

Gold shining metallic strips swirled around the Los Angeles-native’s body, the cascading pieces coming together to form an octopus-like costume.

But it was Z’s crowning glory – a cylindrical head piece that had seemingly been molded into shape, that really drew the eye.

Impossibly tall – you wouldn’t want to be seated behind Z – the two foot hairdo defied gravity.

The statement piece was less couture and more rejected costume department prototype, but it nevertheless suited Z, who has built a reputation from eye-catching red carpet looks.

At least she loves it: Alyson was happy in her striking look, smiling and clearly comfortable as she posed

As for former Disney darling Alyson Stoner, 24, her plunging purple suit was not a winning look.

Going topless beneath the jacket, it left one hoping she had stocked up on tape, to keep her loose top in position.

Luckily it seemed Alyson was happy in her striking look, smiling and clearly comfortable as she posed.

Other stars proved divisive, with fans split over whether they loved or hated their red carpet looks.

Baring all: Normani and Jennifer Lopez’s outfits proved divisive, with fans split over whether they looked good

Jennifer Lopez wore an unbuttoned Roberto Cavalli-branded velvet and leather dress, with a matching bra and  Casadei over-the-knee boots.

While she looked in fantastic shape for 48, J Lo’s raunchy outfit wasn’t to everyone’s taste.

The same could be said for Normani, whose sheer underwear-revealing gown might have been better suited to the bedroom.

Young and hot: But Chantel Jeffries body-baring look wasn’t for everyone
