The winners of the 2018 Norma K Hemming Awards were announced on Friday, 8 June.

Western Australian writer Claire G Coleman won in the long work category for her novel Terra Nullius (Hachette), while the short fiction category (for stories of up to 17,500 words) was won by genderqueer author Foz Meadows, for the story ‘Coral Bones’, from the collection Monstrous Little Voices: New Tales from Shakespeare’s Fantasy World (Abaddon Books).

The Norma K Hemming Awards are presented by the Australian Science Fiction Foundation for works of speculative fiction published in 2016-17 in Australia or written by an Australian citizen that explore the themes of race, gender, sexuality, class or disability. Winners were announced at an event at the Continuum science fiction convention in Melbourne on 8 June.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, this year’s award comprises two categories for the first time: long works and short fiction. For more information about the winners, visit the website.
