CINNAMON LAKE — Why settle for a white wedding when you can opt for one on the wild side.
That is where Deb Breining comes in.
Breining has a flair for the unusual. A self-described “geek,” she grew up watching science-fiction television shows and became smitten with the way-out genre after seeing her first episode of the original Star Trek series.
Not only is Breining a sci-fi fan, but she is an ordained minister registered with the State of Ohio as well. After retiring from the Office of Personnel Management in 2016, she decided to combine her love of weddings with her love of science fiction. That is when An Unusual Affair LLC. “materialized.”
“I work closely with each client,” said Breining. “I write each ceremony specifically for the couple I am working for, so if they want something included from their particular cosplay, whether it is Game of Thrones or Harry Potter, I will put that in. Each ceremony is in the spirit of the original series.”
While Breining will hold small, intimate weddings or elopements on her property at Cinnamon Lake, she has also taken her show, and costumes, on the road.
“The farthest I have been, so far, is Cincinnati,” she said. “And I make my costume to complement what the bridal party is wearing.”
Coming up with the script for the ceremony is the fun part for Breining, who enjoys writing. “I will spend 20-30 hours researching a topic prior to the wedding. One of my upcoming weddings is a 1940s vintage style wedding and it is a delicate dance to be able to address the era and make it a traditional religious ceremony.”
While also performing traditional wedding ceremonies, Breining makes it her goal to understand and embrace any idea of a wedding ceremony that is outside of the traditional realm.
