The Writers’ Guild of Alberta announced the Alberta Literary Award recipients for this year and a Canmore writer was among them. Stephen R. Bown was awarded the Wilfrid Eggleston Award for Nonfiction on June 2 at the awards gala in Calgary. Bown’s won the award for Island of the Blue Foxes: Disaster and Triumph on Bering’s Great Voyage to Alaska — one of eight critically-acclaimed books that he’s written. On his website biography, Bown stated that he blends both nonfiction and fiction techniques in his writing.

“I take a biographical and narrative approach to my writing, using the techniques of fiction writing – strong storytelling, creative language, emphasizing people, their decisions, actions and motivations – to tell factually and historically accurate stories,” he wrote. “I believe that people and their behaviour never change, only the context is different.”

Bown’s literary focus is on the areas of the history of science, exploration, and ideas.

This year marked the 36th anniversary of the Alberta Literary Awards, bringing together writers from across the province. Jurors narrowed the 2018 selection pool from 260 submissions to 24 finalists across eight categories.
