It sounds like Philip K. Dick‘s movie adaptations are old news as we’ve just learned that his short story ‘The Great C’ is getting VR Treatment. The production is coming from Entertainment One’s (eOne) Emmy Award-winning studio Secret Location which will turn the tale into a cinematic virtual reality (VR) narrative. The idea is to debut the experience during the Venice Film Festival this summer which means it is nearly ready to go if not entirely complete.
‘The Great C’ is set to have “a poignant storyline, stunning environment, and powerful soundtrack.” In it, viewers will end up in a post-apocalyptic landscape where a supercomputer known as the Great C rules over what is left of humanity. For the computer to keep the world going, the village, which we jump into, must send a young person on a pilgrimage on a yearly basis who never returns. The reader and viewer will follow Clare. She is a young woman who now must choose to accept these rules or fight against them.
After the festival, it will be released as a timed-exclusive in September.
The features for the narrative include:
It sounds like it could be a fun experience for those who have a chance to try it.
According to President and Co-Founder of Secret Location Ryan Andal:
“Philip K. Dick’s wonderfully forward-thinking stories have always felt primed for telling in equally forward-thinking mediums. Secret Location is highly focused on ushering in the future of storytelling, so pairing The Great C’s provocative themes with our VR development prowess is helping us redefine how we consume sci-fi stories. Authors have long adhered to the ‘show, don’t tell’ technique. We’re hard-pressed to find a better way to ‘show’ a story than in VR – adapting Philip K. Dick’s The Great C only makes our ability to ‘show’ even stronger.”
