Back in the 90s, Hollywood superstars like Julia Roberts, Jim Carry, Tom Hanks and even Will Smith comanded salaries of $20 million if they were headlining a film. A picture of one of these many A-list Hollywood stars on the poster of a film was enough to ensure it’s financial success even if the film wasn’t all that great from a critical point of view.

Unfortunately for the Hollywood stars that is no longer the scenario. These days, a single actor can no longer carry a film all by himself/herself, even the likes of Dwayne Johnson. Instead, the new star of Hollywood films are the visual effects.

More and more studios and filmmakers are exhausting the budget of their films in special effects, to ensure that their films are edgy and full of death defying action. This shift has especially taken place sinced the inception of the superhero films, the resurrection of the Star Wars franchise and the overall trend of big-budget science-fiction films.

Be that as it may, there are still some Hollywood stars who still manage to get a pay cheque, north of $20 million but that again is confined to only a few projects  which has big franchise possibilities such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, the Fast and the Furious franchise and so on.

For instance, Robert Downey Jr. took a pay cheque of $10 million for his less than 15-minute screen-time in Spiderman: Homecoming while when he his leading an Iron Man film or an Avengers film, the amount doubles up in no time.

Daniel Craig, the current and beloved James Bond, is getting $25 million for playing the British spy for the 5th time in the upcoming 2019 Bond film after Spectre. Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio, who usually charges in the ball park of $20 million for a crowd-pleaser like Inception, cut his salary by half to be a part of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Dwayne Johnson, one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood today received a pay cheque of $22 million for the film Read Notice, slated to release in 2020. Among the women, the recent Red Sparrow film got Jennifer Lawrence a pay cheque of $ 15 million while Anne Hathway got the same amount for her upcoming release Barbie (2020).
