Video of Star Trek: Discovery Goes Back Into Production For Season 2
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is a go! CBS All-Access has renewed the Star Trek TV series for a second season. This is great news for anyone who considers themselves a Star Trek fan. As long as there is a Star Trek series on television, there’s hope.
With Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 kicking off production, our best guess is that means Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will premiere right around the same time season one did, so we figure Fall 2018.
There’s a chance it could be later, given the complexities of a show of this scale, but we’ll update this with official confirmation when we have it.
The show has cast Inhumans‘ Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, a role previously held by Jeffrey Hunter in the unaired Star Trek pilot, Sean Kenney in original series Star Trek episode “The Menagerie,” and Bruce Greenwood in the new Star Trek movies.
Jonathan Frakes, who will be directing Episode 2 of the season, recently let it slip that his episode will not only include Pike, but flashbacks to young Burnham and Spock.
Tig Notaro has been cast in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2. According to Variety, the comedian will guest star as Chief Engineer Denise Reno of the U.S.S. Hiawatha.
The folks at TrekMovie caught up with Discovery co-showrunner Aaron Harberts at WonderCon, who confirmed that the second season will once again consist of 13 episodes.
According to Variety, Discovery executive producer Alex Kurtzman will direct the first episode of the season. Kurtzman has previously directed feature films People Like Us and The Mummy.
Jonathan Frakes (ever heard of him) will direct two episodes of the season, one of which is Episode 2.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is now filming in Toronto and, while we’ve yet to get a proper trailer for the upcoming season, CBS All-Access did release this behind-the-scenes sneak peek at what we can expect from Season 2.
Most notably, the video includes some voiceover from Captain Pike in “The Cage,” Star Trek‘s original pilot, which is just pretty cool…
Sadly, we’ve yet to get a Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 trailer. In the mean time, enjoy this clip of Captain Pike chatting with Dr. Boyce in “The Cage.”
Showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts explained to the crowd that Star Trek: Discovery season 2 will edge away from “the backdrop of war” and into a “more exploratory phase and a more diplomatic phase,” steadily becoming “a bit more of a Trekian chapter.”
After fielding several questions from the audience about the continuity of the show, Harberts went on to confirm that Discovery is indeed in the Prime Timeline, and that season 2 will reveal a bit more about how that stitches up to our current knowledge of Trek history:
The idea was to always be in the Prime Timeline. Obviously, there are questions and concerns and things that are different. Our technology is a little different. We have a ship that runs very differently. We are our own show in a lot of ways. Season two is really exciting for us. This is our opportunity to really show how Discovery fits into this Prime Timeline. We are firmly committed to that.
He also added that we may well see an inevitable uniform change for the crew of the Discovery in Season 2. “Well, we bump up against the Enterprise at the end of our [season one] finale, and we know what kind of uniforms they wear. So, we will leave it at that.”
More news as we hear it.
