Fox has said that The Orville, their most-watched debut of last year, will return on Monday December 30.
The 14 episodes of season two of the show, set on the eponymous spaceship 400 years in the future, will then be released weekly in 2019.
British fans were able to watch The Orville season one on Fox UK from December 2017, three months after the series debuted in America.
It is not yet known whether Fox UK will air the show with this gap again or whether the broadcaster will air it shortly after US broadcast as it does with The Walking Dead.
The show will also be available on Sky’s streaming platform, Now TV.
The entire cast of characters from the Star Trek-inspired series are returning for season two.
This includes the lead ship captain, Ed Mercer (played by Seth MacFarlane) and his ex-wife, first officer Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki).
Also coming back are Dr Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald), Lieutenant Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes), Lieutenant Commander Bortus (Peter Macon), Lieutenant Commander John LaMarr (J Lee), and Isaac (Mark Jackson).
Two new actors are also due to join the cast, with Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr in a main role and The Vampire Diaries’ Chris Johnson in a recurring role as Cassius.
Other recurring characters expected to be making an appearance are Lieutenant Yaphit (Norm Macdonald), Admiral Halsey (Victor Garber) and Seth MacFarlane’s sister Rachael as the voice of the Orville computer.
Although no concrete plot details have emerged, some hints out where the series will go have slipped out.
MacFarlane has said that he wants to include more science fiction elements in the series.
This is part of his plan to make The Orville feel more like the classic version of Star Trek.
In an interview with Digital Spy, he said: “I kind of miss the forward-thinking, aspirational, optimistic place in science fiction that Star Trek used to occupy.”
He continued: “I think there’s some space for the aspirational blueprint of what we could do if we get our s*** together.”
Details of two of the forthcoming episodes have also begun to emerge.
Szohr and Johnson’s new characters will both enter the series in the third episode of the season.
Another episode is said to be a ‘bottle’ episode set entirely on-board The Orville.
The official trailer for the series was dropped on July 21.
The three-minute sneak peek gives us many more hints at some of the plot points we should expect, such as Bortus and Grayson having a joint birthday party, a storyline where the former is imprisoned on an alien planet, and the team discovering an entirely new star system.
The Orville returns to Fox on December 30.
