Teen Titans GO! To The Movies

We’ve seen some stellar superhero movies this year.  ‘Black Panther’ broke the mold and records at the same time.  ‘Infinity War’ united every Marvel cinematic hero in one epic cosmic throw down.  And after more than a decade away, ‘The Incredibles 2’ came back to the highest-grossing animated opening of all time.

‘Teen Titans GO! To the Movies’ will not accomplish any of those things, but it could still be a fun, deconstructionist bit of summer entertainment before kids head back to school.  Early reviews indicate that ‘GO!’ follows in the footsteps of meta animated comedies like ‘The LEGO Movie’ which crossed over from the kids and family audiences to viewers of all ages including teens and twenty-somethings.  In the film, Robin, growing disenchanted with being seen as nothing but Batman’s sidekick, decides that the ticket to stardom is for the Teen Titans to get their own movie.  At some point, due to some super villain tampering, the heroes of Earth become possessed by some evil force and only the Titans can stop them.

And, of course, that includes Batman.  In this clip from the movie, the Titans flee from the Dark Knight, who rattles off the names of his old movies every time he overcomes one of their attacks.  A shortened version of this scene appeared in a previous trailer for the movie.

‘GO!’ opens in theaters this weekend.  To help prepare, here are some new photos from the film:

It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies—everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, ‘Teen Titans GO! To The Movies’ features the voices of Will Arnett as Slade, Kristen Bell as Jade Wilson, Greg Cipes as Beast Boy, Scott Menville as Robin, Khary Payton as Cyborg, Tara Strong as Raven and Hynden Walch as Starfire, plus Nicolas Cage as Superman, Greg Davies as Balloon Man, Halsey as Wonder Woman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, Lil Yachty as Green Lantern and Patton Oswalt as The Atom, plus Stan Lee.  It opens in theaters this weekend on July 27, 2018.

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
