Colony

USA brought ‘Colony’ to San Diego Comic-Con in 2015 and the show has had a presence at the annual pop culture fest since, until this past weekend.  ‘Colony’ was nowhere to be seen.  Instead, USA went all in on their new TV series ‘The Purge’ based on the popular low-budget horror flicks.  Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it looks all but certain that USA has cancelled ‘Colony’.  The series was co-created by Ryan J. Condal (who penned the recent hit movie ‘Rampage’) and Carlton Cuse (‘Lost’, ‘Bates Motel’, ‘The Strain’).  Cuse left the series before the third season to focus on the new Amazon series ‘Jack Ryan’ and Wes Tooke stepped in to work with Condal.

‘Colony’ followed the Bowman family, who struggled to survive in the aftermath of an alien invasion.  The cast was headed up by ‘Lost’ alum Josh Holloway as patriarch Will Bowman and included ‘The Walking Dead”s Sarah Wayne Callies as his wife Katie, a leading Resistance operative, with Alex Neustaedter as Bram, Isabella Crovetti-Cramp as Grace and Jacob Buster as Charlie, their kids.  Amanda Righetti starred as Katie’s sister Maddie and the cast also included Peter Jacobson, Tory Kittles, and Ally Walker.

The series kicked off with great ratings, 2.2 million viewers and was the highest rated scripted cable series on Thursday nights.  But over time, ratings dwindled, slowly at first.  But a  third season shift to Wednesday nights didn’t help.  Perhaps coincidentally, production on ‘Colony’ moved from California (where they had previously gotten a tax break) to Vancouver for the third season.  This upcoming Wednesday night will mark the final new episode of ‘Colony’.  By the end, the series was averaging 1.3 million viewers.

The series was nominated in three consecutive years for the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Television Series, although it never won.

Are you a fan of ‘Colony’?  Are you sad to see it go?

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
